Reading Between the Lines

Reading and Brainstorming| Read the article (link below) in NewsEla titled Learning Inference as a Reading Skill Complete the questions below and comment your numbered answers.

Multiple Choice, yo.

  1. Read the paragraph from the section “Picking Up On Character Flaws Or Weaknesses.” Read this paragraph: “When you read long passages, you pick up on subtle hints and store them in your memory. By accumulating these clues and adding them together, you are able to make further inferences as you read.” Which word, if it replaced “accumulating” in the paragraph above, would CHANGE the meaning of the paragraph? Is it A. dropping, B. gathering, C. collecting, or D. acquiring?
  2. Read the following sentence from the section “Why Does Inference Matter?” – “All of your reading skills work in unison as you practice reading so that the more you read, the more you build upon your skills.” The phrase “in unison” tells the reader that _____. A. reading skills do hard work, B. reading skills work efficiently, C. reading skills work together, or D. reading skills do important work
  3. Which sentence from the article would be MOST important to include in a summary of the article? A. Inference is the process of formulating an idea or drawing a conclusion based on tangible evidence, B. You can most likely infer that the pronoun “he” refers to Gary, C. You most likely concluded that it means something similar to howl or scream, or D. There is simply not enough information in this short passage to help the reader make a reasonable conclusion about Lucy’s personality
  4. Read the following selection from the article: “For example, you probably concluded from the dialogue and details that Lucy and Gary are cold, and that they may be in serious trouble. However, if you look back, you’ll see that there is no direct statement about the temperature in the passage, and this is because you probably determined the information from several other clues in the text.” How does this detail develop the article’s CENTRAL idea? A. t shows how the passage lacks evidence to support an inference about Lucy’s personality, B. It gives a reason why inference is essential for reading comprehension, C. It explains how to use context clues to determine the meaning of words, or D. It gives an example of a reasonable inference about the passage

    1. By informing us of information that we do not understanding. They could also teach us a better way to share. For example, if we share our jobs with AI it may have a positive outcome.
    2. They could become chemist or scientist, it could be a great way to get more accurate measurements and to solve scientific issues that humans cannot.

    B.
    1. Because of certain movies and popular belief, robots have been stereotyped as dangerous and untrustworthy. I think that humans feel that if they see something that similar to themselves, it will replace them.
    2. They could live among us and be treated equally to humans.
    C.
    1. They would work for themselves, there would be no need for us to control them. AI would simply live alongside us and make decisions for themselves. Yet, there is an extremely low chance that they would be accepted.
    2. No, not until she can fully understand emotions, voting is a very important decision that takes a lot of contemplation and using statistics alone might not have the best outcome. So, I don’t believe Sophia would be ready to vote yet.

They can teach us how much information they are able to hold and use at any moment. They can also motivate us to conduct more experiments and learn how much they are actually able to handle.
    Q.A2
The AI could help manage more factories so that people can get jobs that will allow them to rest more and have more times to do activities with their family. Another way the AI may benefit us can be through technology or social media. For example, the AI could be working technology and providing educational information for all ages.
    Q.B1
The thought of robots taking over our world would scare some people generally. The reason why I believe people are scared of this type of technology taking over may be because they wouldn’t want AI or robots to see into their live or understand the ways we work.
    Q.B2
Humans are able to have a mind of their own without being controlled or even monitored by someone incase they lose control. Robots are generally controlled by people and are generated to say or do whatever someone wishes.
    Q.C1
If robots identify themself as a person of there own and don’t wanna be controlled anymore, they will most likely not listen to anyone. I would assume that all of the AI robots or robots that are made, would have a way to connect them all by a shut down button whether it’s on a screen or one a table.
    Q.C2
In my opinion, I believe she shouldn’t be able to vote because she isn’t able to have a thought or opinion about someone or something. Everyone should be able to have a opinion about someone and anything but because Sophia isn’t able to have these thought process I don’t think she should be able to vote.

  7. Question B1. Humans would be scared if they lose control of robots because robots are machines and if you do something wrong to a robot it will go crazy.

Question B2. Robots are designed things that humans create. Humans are unique because God made us in his own image.

Question C1. If robots wanted to work for human the person they wanted to work for would be their boss. We would have to pour water on it and create a new robot that is a working robot.

Question C2. No, because she would try to use robots to vote also.

  8. Question C1. no one would be their boss because they don’t work for anybody and if you want to gain control over it just reprogram it.

Question C2. No, because she is a robot, and robots should not vote.
